Aurora Borealis California March 2024

Aurora Borealis Expected to be Visible in Northern California and Alabama

Geomagnetic Storm on May 10th

NOAA predicts a rare treat

A severe geomagnetic storm is impacting Earth and could produce powerful auroras as far south as Northern California and Alabama. The storm began Sunday night and is expected to reach its peak on May 10th.

The auroras are caused by a stream of particles from the sun that are interacting with Earth's magnetic field. The particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, where they collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, creating the colorful displays.

Auroras are most commonly seen in the higher latitudes, but during a severe geomagnetic storm, they can be visible much further south. The best time to see the auroras is at night, when the sky is dark.

The geomagnetic storm is also expected to cause some disruption to power grids and communications. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is urging people to be prepared for possible power outages and to avoid using electronic devices that could be damaged by the storm.
