Green Nail Syndrome: Why Your Nails Are Turning Green

What is Green Nail Syndrome?

Green nail syndrome (GNS) is a fungal infection of the nails that leads to a greenish discoloration of the nails. It is caused by a type of mold that thrives in warm, moist environments. GNS is most common in people who wear artificial nails, such as acrylics or gels, because these nails create a warm, moist environment that is ideal for mold growth.

Causes of Green Nail Syndrome

GNS is caused by a type of mold called Aspergillus niger. This mold is commonly found in soil and water, and it can also be found on human skin. When Aspergillus niger gets into the nail bed, it can cause an infection that leads to GNS.

Symptoms of Green Nail Syndrome

The most common symptom of GNS is a greenish discoloration of the nails. The discoloration can range from a light green to a dark green, and it can affect one or more nails. Other symptoms of GNS can include: * Thickening of the nails * Brittleness of the nails * Crumbling of the nails * Pain or tenderness in the nails

Treatment of Green Nail Syndrome

GNS is usually treated with topical antifungal medications. These medications are applied directly to the infected nails, and they work by killing the mold that is causing the infection. In some cases, oral antifungal medications may be necessary.

Prevention of Green Nail Syndrome

There are a few things you can do to prevent GNS, including: * Keep your nails clean and dry. * Avoid wearing artificial nails for extended periods of time. * If you do wear artificial nails, make sure to remove them and clean your nails regularly. * See a doctor if you have any symptoms of GNS.
