Jade Carey Wins Gold in Women's Floor Exercise at Tokyo 2020
After a Scary Vault Final in Tokyo Olympics
American Jade Carey put a major setback behind her to rebound and win gold in the women's floor exercise final on Friday, August 2, 2021
Carey, 21, nailed all four of her tumbling passes on the way to winning gold with a 14.366 in the floor exercise final. She finished ahead of Vanessa Ferrari of Italy, who took silver with a 14.200, and Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee, who won bronze with a 14.166.
Carey's victory was a major triumph after she suffered a scary fall in the vault final on Thursday, July 29, 2021. Carey landed awkwardly on her head and neck after attempting a Yurchenko double pike, and she was taken to the hospital for evaluation. She was later cleared of any serious injuries, but the fall shook her up.
Carey's gold medal in the floor exercise final is her first Olympic medal. She is the first American woman to win the gold medal in the floor exercise since Dominique Dawes in 1996.
