Miami Infield Prospect Departs Early with Injury

Edwards' Injury Leaves Marlins with Uncertain Infield

Miami Marlins shortstop Xavier Edwards departed during Friday night's game against the Chicago Cubs with tightness in his lower back.

In his first 32 games this season, Edwards has hit .386 with an OPS of .933. He has also stolen 12 bases.

Edwards became the third player in Major League Baseball to hit for the cycle this season when he went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, triple, and single in a game against the Cubs on June 14.

The Marlins called up middle infielder Jose Devers from Triple-A Jacksonville to take Edwards' place on the roster.

Edwards' injury is not expected to be long-term, but it is a blow to the Marlins, who are currently in the midst of a playoff race.
