Governor Mills Directs Flags Lowered Tomorrow in Honor of 9/11 Victims, Survivors, First Responders, and Servicemembers
Flags across Maine to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset September 11
Governor Janet Mills has directed that United States and State of Maine flags across Maine be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset tomorrow, September 11, in honor of the victims, survivors, first responders, and servicemembers affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
“Twenty-one years ago, the world watched in horror as the Twin Towers collapsed, the Pentagon burned, and Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania,” said Governor Mills. “The victims of these horrific attacks were mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, friends and neighbors. We mourn their loss and extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones.
On this solemn anniversary, we also honor the countless survivors of these attacks, whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day. We are grateful for their strength and resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity."
Governor Mills continued: “Today, we also pay tribute to the courageous first responders and servicemembers who risked their own lives to save others. Their bravery and selflessness is an inspiration to us all. We are forever indebted to them for their service.”
In accordance with President Biden’s proclamation, the Governor has directed that the United States flag should be flown at half-staff on all state buildings until sunset on Monday, September 13. The Governor encourages businesses and residents to fly their own U.S. and Maine state flags at half-staff as well.
